Our Kindness Volunteer Crew will be celebrating, as usual, by fixin' computers for the public. We're going to host 2 clinics:
We not only fix computers, but we also install software and hardware (registrants must purchase what they want and bring it with them to the clinic). You MUST register for this event by going to http://synergypublishing.com and clicking on the "Tell Me More" link. Spread the word. Kindness is catching!
2) Links (these links open in a new window)The Center for Digital Government recently selected the "Best on the Web" websites for government & education. Congratulations to Tampa for taking 1st place in the Local Government category: www.tampagov.net/ Software Utilities our Resource Center crew frequently recommends several programs to our members. Member Howard Poindexter created a webpage that has the links to download them. The following 2 links are useful for concerned voters trying to make informed decisions next Tuesday: Florida Amendments Great page to research the amendments we'll be voting on next Tuesday. It includes a brief summary of the amendment along with the pros and cons. This page is sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Selector TBO.com, The Tampa Tribune and WFLA, News Channel 8 provide this selector to help you determine which gubernatorial candidate you agree with the most.
3) The Virus VortexWhile I hate writing about viruses all the time, I often don't feel like I have much of a choice. New and recycled viruses are making the rounds, and you need to know what's a goin' on.
Greeting Card Virus Here's an interesting new virus wrinkle. Complaints are beginning to roll in from those who have been sent to FriendGreetings.com or Cool-Downloads.com to pick up an E-Card. In order to pick up your e-card, you have to download their software. In order to install their software, you have to accept their EULA (End-User Licensing Agreement - this is the window that pops up with almost any new software that you must agree to before it will install). If you agree to their EULA, you are agreeing that their software can send email to everyone in your Microsoft Outlook Contacts Folder. This is the way an Internet worm is spread, however this time the payload is openly marketed by a Panamanian company called PermissionedMedia. They make the following claim: "Our real-time, behavior targeted, ad campaigns are producing dramatic results for over 100 online advertisers. With industry leading click through rates as high as 10%. Displaying your targeted message on consumer's screens while they view web pages across the web." They do this by installing spyware on your computer that watches your surfing habits, and then pops up their advertiser's advertising windows as you surf. While this is not officially a virus or worm because you have the option of installing it, unsuspecting "customers" quickly find that they get lots of unwanted popup windows. If you've made the mistake of installing this annoying little bit of software, you should go someplace like: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99760.htm for more info and removal instructions.
