Heaven's this Bulletin is long this week!  Tired of receiving it?  Just ask and we will remove you from our mailing list - this IS truly an opt-in list.  These Bulletins are sent weekly, and are primarily of interest to members of the Tampa Bay Computer Society.  However, feel free to share anything of interest that you see here with others, and we are happy to add non-members to our list if they request it.  --  Thanks, Doc (Dave Dockery)

1) WOW!  What a Meeting!

We didn't know what to expect.  We had the Largo Cultural Center set up tables and 250 chairs.  I suspected when I dropped by Chuck Vroman's SIG and saw almost 100 people attending that we may have under-prepared, but I still wasn't ready for what happened after that: people just kept coming and coming and coming - almost 300 of them (official count: 297).

Not only did we overflow the room, we also took in about 4 times as much money that night as we normally do at our monthly meeting.  It's a good time to do that because we will probably have to make some new equipment purchases in the near future (drop by our next Board meeting on February 12th if you want to get in on those discussions).

Many of our audience were there specifically to see Dave Gussow and John Torro, but we also picked up some new attendees simply because of the new venue.  We LIKED the Largo Cultural Center.  It's a great change of pace for us, and it's very comfortable.  They open a concession stand for us before the meeting and during our break, and they were doing a booming business both times.

All in all, it was an exciting and fun-filled evening.  We have a few logistical problems to work out, but that was to be expected.  You'll see some changes already in effect next month, and some more will probably be coming.  Our thanks to all who contributed toward making it such a success!

2) TBCS Classes are Taking Registrations

At the December meeting I announced a new educational initiative as a top-priority goal for our club.  In a nutshell, the goal is to develop a series of computer classes and recruit some trainers so that we can offer training on a continuing basis at our Resource Center.  Some of the classes will be hands-on; some of them will be standard classroom instruction.  Some of the classes will have a charge attached; some will be free.

First let me say how gratified I am that people are coming together to make this happen.  My friend, Art Crofford, has volunteered to coordinate the project.  If you're interested in volunteering to teach a class OR if you're interested in suggesting a topic for a class, please email him at ac@ajcas.com.  Art had a meeting of some of the volunteer instructors after the General Meeting on Tuesday night.  We have about a dozen volunteer instructors bursting with some fresh ideas.  We'll keep you posted as this project develops.

Two brand spankin' new classes are already scheduled and open for registration:

Basic Internet Thursday, January 30, 1-3 PM
E-mail Thursday, February 6, 1-3 PM

Both classes are hands-on and will be held in our Computer Lab at the Resource Center (map).  Both classes are FREE at this time (we reserve the right to charge a nominal fee for them in the future).  The instructor is club president, Jim Boynton.

We only have room for 6 people at a time for any of our hands-on classes so get your registration in asap.  Please register by either leaving a message at 727-443-4433 or sending an email to our club secretary at tbcs.office@verizon.net.
